A horror movie for the terminally online.
The entire movie is about a liminal space. The setting is interesting so the visuals are fun. It's very surreal with nonsensical designs and a maze of nearly empty spaces. It had a bit of a Yume Nikki feeling.
Plotwise, it's pretty weak. An asshole divorcee discovers a liminal space in his business and starts exploring it. He convinces his 2 employees to help him document the space and both of them get stuck and die in the liminal space. His therapist decides to look for him in the liminal space and gets trapped in there as well.
I don't read a lot of creepypasta, but the plotline feels just as disappointing as reading creepypasta.
Parts of the movie were "filmed" on a camcorder. These parts offered the best visuals, but they weren't recorded on a camcorder though like the film implies. The shots are sharp, way too sharp to be recorded on a 1990 camcorder. The footage is digitally modified, but filtered to almost have the look of the camcorder image.
The director made a huge mistake in explicitly showing the main monster. The 3D model is GOOFY and not at all scary. There are 3 lesser monsters that are surreal/glitchy and much more scary, even when shown straight on.
The director chose to make a breakerbox a part of the setting, but I also felt like he was as intimdated by breaker boxes as I am. It felt like he'd done 0 research on them and was as confused about them as I am.
Allegedly, there is more about the Async group in the Youtube Series, but it is hardly covered in the film. Maybe he's saving that for a sequel.
My recommendation? Play Yume Nikki instead!!
